Research Postgraduate Scholarships for Research Visits

Supported by the Fung Foundation, Research Postgraduate Scholarships have been available since 2017-18 to encourage full-time research postgraduate students to undertake short-term research visits to overseas institutions and to encourage overseas research postgraduate students to conduct research at Lingnan. The Scholarships are competitive and based on academic performance. A research visit normally lasts between one term and 6 months. Supervisors from the home and host institutions work together to advise the scholarship awardees and exchange information about their progress on a regular basis.

In 2017-18, Lingnan sent out two students and hosted five students. According to Miss Beth Cairns, an incoming PhD student in Criminology from the University of Stirling, her 6-month stay in Hong Kong was fascinating. Experiencing a working environment in a different culture gave her the opportunity to develop many skills. Having a chance to take some time to research transgender rights – a topic that she was passionate about – in a different context greatly deepened her knowledge of the topic. She concluded that this experience would greatly benefit her research and teaching for years to come.

Mr Nunzio Nazareno Donzuso, an incoming PhD student in Social Security from Zhejiang University, believed that his methodological understanding of his research on the pension systems in Italy and China was sharpened by the advice offered by Lingnan faculty. He enjoyed his participation in the international symposium Contesting Globalisation and Implications for Asian Pacific Higher Education: Resurgent Nationalism in International Higher Education, which allowed him to share ideas about China’s education policy with distinguished scholars. He also appreciated the peer support kindly offered by Mr Muhammed Siraj Muhammed, a Lingnan PhD student in the Department of Economics. He cherished his memories and the valuable knowledge acquired during his stay in Lingnan and Hong Kong, which would never cease to feel like home.

These Research Postgraduate Scholarships motivate students to conduct international and comparative research. The Scholarships have also greatly enhanced students’ international learning experiences, developed their global perspective and nurtured their respect for cultural diversity.
