Measuring the Intercultural Competence of Outgoing Exchange Students

To perform a holistic assessment of the learning outcomes for our outgoing exchange students, the Office of Global Education will conduct a pilot study using the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), which will objectively measure the intercultural competence of our outgoing exchange students. Students who participate in regular exchange programmes in 2018-19 will be invited to take pre- and post-exchange IDI assessment tests, so that the benefits they gain during the exchange can be assessed. Three members of the Office of Global Education who are IDI Qualified Administrators will conduct the IDI tests and provide students with guidance on preparing for their exchange trips and making the best of this valuable opportunity. Individual profile sessions will also be in place to ensure students begin planning well before the exchange; this will allow them to substantially increase their intercultural competence based on their individual IDI profile results. This IDI pilot study will help our outgoing exchange students to have enriching experiences when studying abroad.
