Three Lingnan students participated in an exchange programme to learn more about financial development in mainland China, while their peers from Shanghai visited the University on 28 July.

Alumni Homecoming Day, the annual highlight for Lingnanians, was successfully held on 7-8 July 2012. The event was overwhelmingly received this year, with 570 alumni from 1995 to 2011 and their friends/families having joined the event.

Trustees of US-based Lingnan Foundation paid a visit to Lingnan University on 29 June. The delegation was warmly received by Prof William Lee, Acting President and Mr Matthew Mo, Director of Institutional Advancement and Alumni Affairs.

Research and academic activities

Lingnan has come second among local tertiary institutions in obtaining grants from Hong Kong’s Research Grants Council in 2012/13 after funds were awarded for 16 of its 40 proposals submitted.

Lingnan has achieved a record success rate of 53% this year for its Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme nominations, as compared with that of 35% for all institutions funded by the University Grants Committee.

Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Lingnan University co-organised a public seminar on 5 July on “Cantonese Opera and the Witty Maids” as one of the supporting cultural activities of Hong Kong Book Fair 2012.

Awards and people

Lingnan’s Dragon Boat Team has won a championship and two prizes in three recent tournaments.

President Chan Yuk-Shee and Associate Vice-President Prof Chan Tsang-sing are awardees of Silver Bauhinia Star (SBS) and Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS) respectively on the 2012 HKSAR Government Honours List.

Prof Leung Ping-kwan, Chair Professor of Comparative Literature at Lingnan University, has been named “Author of the Year” at the Hong Kong Book Fair 2012.

The Lingnan flag fluttered on Mount Everest on 19 May as Peter Mok, a 2011 graduate of the University’s Master of Arts in Practical Philosophy programme, conquered the world’s highest peak.
