About 20 volunteers from the Lingnan University Alumni Volunteer Team received 15 disadvantaged families supported by the Benji’s Centre on campus on 24 November, kick-starting its first service to the community.
Excited to visit the University for the first time, all participating families were impressed by the facilities and environment of the campus, especially the lecture theatres, hostels and the sports complex. In addition to the campus tour, group games and workshops were organised for the visiting families, which were aimed at enhancing their children’s communication skills. Lunch was also provided at the canteen.
To provide our alumni a platform to help the needy in the community and to put our motto “Education for Service” into practice, the Lingnan University Alumni Volunteer Team was founded by the Alumni Affairs Team of the Office of Institutional Advancement and Alumni Affairs in August 2012.
Established in 2004, the Benji’s Centre is the first and only charitable organisation in Hong Kong providing specialised one-on-one professional speech therapy to children from low-income families. It also provides training and support services to their parents in order to help those children and their families integrate into the community.
