More than 10 scholars from local universities exchanged their views at the one-day conference on “Cultural Transformation in the 1950s: From Mainland China to Hong Kong”, organised by the Centre for Humanities Research of Lingnan University on 8 May. Ms Marie-Claire Kou of Le Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris was invited to attend as a special presenter. Other participants included Mr Oscar Ho, Department of Cultural and Religious Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong; Dr Yau Wai-ping, Department of English Language and Literature, Hong Kong Baptist University; Dr Chan Chi-tak, Department of Chinese, Hong Kong Institute of Education; Prof Sun Yifeng, Department of Translation, and Dr Sophia Law, Department of Visual Studies, Lingnan University.

At the conference, the participants examined the transformation of urban culture and its transference from mainland China to Hong Kong during the 1950s as reflected in literature, films, translation, Western painting and comics.
