Mr Shinji Yamaguchi, a researcher from the National Institute for Defense Studies of the Japanese Ministry of Defense,  was invited to speak on “China-Japan Maritime Relations: Impacts on East Asian Security and Stability” on 18 March.

The rise of China is accompanied by its efforts to become a global maritime power. However, its naval modernisation and expanding naval activities have led to increasing security concerns in Japan. This results in intensifying strategic mistrusts between the two countries and bilateral maritime disputes in both territorial and naval dimensions. The current dispute over Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands is an exemplar of such tensions.

Mr Shinji Yamaguchi is a Tokyo-based research fellow at the Regional Studies Department of the National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS), Ministry of Defense of Japan. He specialises in civil-military relations in China, Chinese politics, Chinese security policy and contemporary Chinese history. His recent publications include “The 18th Chinese Communist Party Congress and Xi Jinping” in NIDS Briefing, December 2012. He is also a co-author of NIDS China Security Report 2012.
