Prof Sophia Law of Lingnan’s Department of Visual Studies has received a Merit of Certificate under the Non-School Division of Award for Arts Education at the Hong Kong Arts Development Council Awards 2013.
Prof Law was awarded for an art facilitation programme entitled “Creativity Engage!”, co-operating with TWGH Tuen Mun Integrated Service Centre and the charitable organisation Art for All to serve 45 junior students who are plagued with learning disabilities in three secondary schools in Tuen Mun. Prof Law also received Lingnan’s “Education for Service” Faculty Award for this project in 2013.
“The significance of the award lies in its recognition of the work of Lingnan University in using art to reach out and help students with dyslexia. I truly believe that as members of academia, our mission is not just to do research and teach but also to use our knowledge to make a better world. There is no model answer in art, which opens many possibilities to students. For junior secondary school students, self-identity is very important. And for students with dyslexia, the conventional curriculum does not allow them to develop and demonstrate their strength and talent in visual thinking. Art, as an alternative, is a perfect platform for these students to explore their inner self and potentials,” Prof Law said at the award presentation ceremony on 25 April.
