President Chan Yuk-Shee was conferred the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa at the 20th Congregation of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) on 16 November.
President Chan’s mission in education was hailed. “Prof Chan has set his sights on giving Hong Kong the finest liberal arts education possible. To reach this goal, he hangs his hat on quality, determined to give the students an integrated living and learning environment on campus and ample global exposure,” the citation reads.
As the Founding Dean of the world-acclaimed HKUST School of Business and Management, President Chan attached great importance to academic research and contributed to the School’s rapid global rise. He initiated the collaboration between HKUST and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, leading to Hong Kong’s first joint EMBA, which has now been the world’s top EMBA programme for four consecutive years.
Other recipients of honorary doctorates were Sir Michael Atiyah, Honorary Professor, the University of Edinburgh; Prof Justin Lin Yifu, Honorary Dean of the National School of Development, Peking University; Prof H Vincent Poor, Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science, Princeton University; and Dr the Hon Allen Zeman, Chairman of Ocean Park and Lan Kwai Fong Holdings Ltd.
