On 25 May, Lingnan’s Centre for Humanities Research and the Hong Kong Central Library co-presented the May session of the Monthly Literary Talk Series 2013 on “True Lies: Evan Yang’s Urban Fiction and Films”.
Dr Mary Wong Shuk-han, CHR’s Acting Director, and Mr Shu Kei, dean of Film and Television, the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, gave an overview of Evan Yang’s films and short stories and discussed their relationship. Evan Yang was best remembered as one of the most outstanding directors and screenwriters of Hong Kong Mandarin cinema during the 1950s, whose blockbusters included Spring Song (1959), Air Hostess (1959) and Sun, Moon and Star (1961), although he was also a novelist and lyricist.
At the lecture, Dr Wong also launched CHR’s latest book True Lies: Selected Short Stories of Evan Yang, a collection of 37 short stories written in the 1950s that had been known to very few. This book was funded by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and part of the Research Grants Council General Research Fund project “Hong Kong Literature and Culture of the 1950s”.
