In response to the nomination by Legislative Council member the Hon Charles Peter Mok, Lingnan University Council Chairman the Hon Bernard Chan took the “Ice Bucket Challenge” on 21 August and then nominated President Leonard K Cheng, who took the challenge on 22 August.
President Cheng hopes his participation will encourage students to think of creative ways to help people in need. “I have seen many times how the winning team in American football matches pours water on their coach’s head. This is the first time that the act is done for a different purpose. When an old practice is applied in a new fashion, that’s innovation,” said President Cheng who also donated US$100 to the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Association.
Three exchange students Sadiq Valliani, Fabian Kaempf and Charlotte Bonnaud, as well as Prof Dean Tjosvold, Henry Y W Fong Chair Professor of Management, also responded to President Cheng’s nomination and took part in the challenge.
The “Ice Bucket Challenge” involves dumping a bucket of ice water on someone’s head to promote awareness of the disease ALS and encourage donations for medical research. The challenge dares nominated participants to be filmed having a bucket of ice water poured on their heads and to challenge three other people to do the same. The nominated people have 24 hours to comply and donate US$10, or forfeit by way of a charitable donation of US$100.
