The three volumes of Selected Works of Xu Zidong (in Chinese), Head of the Department of Chinese at Lingnan University, have quickly moved up the best seller lists (for new books on literary theory, Chinese history and cultural critique, respectively) after they were published in mainland China in December 2011. Talks on various topics and book signing sessions given by Prof Xu at Peking University, Renmin University of China, East China Normal University, South China Normal University and Shanghai Library were well received and reported by many mainland newspapers and magazines. Some also did interviews with Prof Xu and feature stories on him.

In Volume One, Prof Xu uses the structural analysis of Russian scholar Vladimir Propp to re-examine 50 novels on the Chinese people’s collective memory of the Cultural Revolution. Volume Two is a record of his years of research on modern Chinese literature and writers Eileen Chang and Yu Dafu, and includes the text of his three lectures at Peking University and Fudan University and on Phoenix TV’s China Forum. Volume Three is a collection of his essays and commentaries on films, books and social issues over the last 10 years, and has a chapter on his upbringing. Since 2000, Prof Xu has served as guest presenter with Dao Wentao and Leung Man-tao for Phoenix TV’s talk show Behind the Headlines with Wentao.
