Prize-winning books of the “German Best Book Design 2012 and 2013” are now on display at Lingnan’s Fong Sum Wood Library on campus until 20 December. An opening ceremony officiated by Ms Gabriele Sander, Head of Library and Information Service, Hong Kong Goethe Institute and Ms Rachel Cheng, the University’s Librarian, was held on 11 November.
Among 889 nominations in 2012 and 723 nominations in 2013 respectively, 25 books published in German under five categories (general literature; scientific books, school books and educational books; guide books and non-fiction; art books, photo books and exhibition catalogues, as well as children’s books and books for adolescences) are awarded for their print quality, picture-text relationship, cover design and readability.
Stiftung Buchkunst (German Book Foundation) has been awarding “The German Best Book Design” since 1951. Members of the foundation are the German Publishers and Booksellers Association, the German National Library and two cities with a long publishing history, Frankfurt and Leipzig. The jury of the annual competition consists of established book designers, publishers and printers – all of them are masters in their disciplines and experts in judging quality.
