At the “Tuesdays with Mentors” dinner talk on 16 September, Lingnan alumnus Dr Henry Choi shared with students how he overcame the challenges in career development and encouraged students to build a positive attitude.

Despite the negative impact of the financial tsunami on his career prospects in 2008, Dr Choi never thought of giving up and continued to pursue his interest in research and writing. Passionate about historical studies, he has written numerous publications on the history of China and Hong Kong over the years.

“Although I have obtained three degrees, I never regard myself as successful. I’m just a hard-working man striving to achieve my personal goals,” said Dr Choi. After graduating from the Department of History at Lingnan in 2006, he received his MPhil from Lingnan University and PhD in History from the University of Hong Kong. During his study at HKU, he was awarded the “Wang Gungwu Prize for Postgraduate Students in History” to recognise his excellent academic and research achievements. After receiving his doctoral degree, Dr Choi has been teaching Chinese history and culture at the HKU School of Chinese.
