Reputed Chinese writer Prof Wang Xiaoming gave an inspiring public lecture on the new landscape of contemporary Chinese literature after the opening ceremony of “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Distinguished Visiting Professorship of Modern Chinese Literature at Lingnan University Scheme” on 25 February 2011. This year, the University has invited Prof Wang, who heads the Cultural Studies Programme of Shanghai University, to be the visiting professor under the scheme. Officiating guests at the ceremony included Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Manager Ms Olga Chew, and Lingnan University President Prof Chan Yuk-Shee and Chinese Department Head Prof Xu Zidong.

At the lecture, Prof Wang gave an in-depth analysis of the development of Chinese literature in mainland China in the past 2 decades. He reviewed the rise of internet literature and the changes which had taken place in traditional print literature, and provided an outlook on future trends.

Launched in 2009, “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Distinguished Visiting Professorship of Modern Chinese Literature at Lingnan University Scheme” is funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. It aims at promoting academic exchange and scholarship in modern Chinese literature. In the past two years, world-renowned academics were invited to be visiting scholars at Lingnan for a semester. Their public lectures and workshops for secondary school teachers were all highly regarded by academia and the community.
