Over 30 scholars and critics from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and Korea attended the two-day symposium jointly organised by Kwan Fong Cultural Research & Development Programme, Inter-Asia School, International Center for Taiwan Social Studies of Shih Hsin University and Center for Asia-Pacific / Cultural Studies of National Chiao Tung University on 9-10 June.
Discussions at the symposium focused on The Mao Zedong Era and Post Mao Era: An Alternative Writing of History by renowned Chinese scholar Prof Qian Liqun, who has lived through the founding of the People’s Republic to the post-Mao era. This magnum opus represents a deep reflection of Qian, as an independent intellectual with critical thinking, on the historical periods he has gone through. Topics discussed at the symposium included historical experiences and the intellectual trajectory of Qian, his understanding of contemporary Chinese history, the participants’ understanding of Qian’s book and its impact on the study of Mao in China as well as other Asian countries.
