Prof Liah Greenfeld, Distinguished Adjunct Professor in Sociology and Social Policy of Lingnan University, gave a short course on nationalism, its roots and implications on 12-15 May.
The four-day master class was designed to give participants a comprehensive framework for the study of nationalism regarding its nature, origins and multiple connections to various aspects of modernity, such as modern politics, society, economy, culture and existential experience. The lectures drew attendance not only from Lingnan staff and students but also representatives from other universities in Hong Kong, who almost made up half of the class.
Born in the former Soviet Union, educated in Israel and now teaching in the US, Prof Greenfeld is an internationally renowned scholar of culture and nationalism. Prof Greenfeld’s appointment with Lingnan commits her to visit and teach at Lingnan for a month every year for a period of five years.
