US Consul General Mr Stephen Young and Consulate Cultural Unit Chief Ms Naeema Whatley visited Lingnan on 6 March. They had afternoon tea with 10 local and US students before meeting President Prof Chan Yuk-Shee and the University’s senior management and touring the Fong Sum Wood Library.

Heidi Barker, an exchange student from Butler University studying at Lingnan this semester, said she enjoyed the tea gathering and found it useful. “Consul General Young knows a lot about business and government relations between the US and China, including the Hong Kong SAR, which I’m keen to learn more about.”

Philosophy student Jason Cheung said, “Mr Young is a nice person who has a great sense of humour. When he shared with us his views about the medical system in the US, he could objectively point out its pros and cons. The job of a diplomat offers one the chance to live and work in different cultures, to be trained to be open-minded and see things from various perspectives.”

Mr Young called on students to follow their passion in choosing their careers rather than drifting along with societal trends blindly.
