A visiting team from the University Grants Committee (UGC) came to Lingnan University on 5 September to foster better mutual understanding and enhance direct communication with staff and students. Led by UGC Chairman Mr Edward Cheng Wai-sun, the 18-member team was accompanied by Secretary-General Dr Richard Armour and Secretariat staff.
Following welcome remarks and a briefing on major developments at Lingnan by President Leonard K Cheng as well as a question-and-answer session with members of the senior management, the team met with academic members of the three faculties, both experienced and early in career. There was an exchange with 20 undergraduate and research postgraduate students from different departments afterwards.
"UGC Chairman Mr Edward Cheng called on us to propose ideas on how the UGC could help Lingnan enhance its liberal arts education. He promised that the UGC would consider these suggestions with an open mind. We are most encouraged by this supportive message," said President Cheng. The team also discussed with Lingnan participants the current issues and challenges faced by the University and the higher education sector of Hong Kong.
A guided tour of the campus led by students had been arranged for some members of the team who arrived earlier, before the full team joined a luncheon with staff and students. The last time that UGC members visited Lingnan was in 2011.
