The Government has launched the 6th Matching Grant Scheme (MGS) for a two-year period from 1 August 2012 to 31 July 2014, with an aim to strengthen UGC-funded institutions’ fundraising capabilities and foster a philanthropic culture. Each institution has a guaranteed minimum matching grant of HK$60 million, which will be matched on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

Dr Tao Kwok-cheung, Senior Lecturer in Philosophy of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Dr Mary Wong, Acting Director of Lingnan’s Centre for Humanities Research, discussed at a public seminar the metaphors of life as shown in the blockbuster Life of Pi from a philosophical perspective.

The third Lingnan Arts Festival was held on 4-22 March, bringing renowned artists from Hong Kong and other parts of the world to showcase their talents on campus. This year the annual gala featured an array of performances, exhibitions, lectures and seminars on Cantonese opera, Chinese and Western music, theatre, fashion, independent films and local art development.

Four university records were broken at Lingnan’s 45th Sports Day held on 7 March, in which 308 athletes participated. New records were achieved in Men’s 400m, Women’s 100m hurdle, Women’s 100m and Women’s long jump.

Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) Chief Officer Mr Edmund Leung and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited former Chief Marketing Officer Mr Lawrence Fok were invited to speak at two University Assemblies held in Term 2 of Year 2012/13.

On 12 March, Lingnan social sciences freshman Jack Wong shared his experience in two polar expeditions organised by Yan Oi Tong.

A total of 58 attendees of the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) 2013 Conference, representing 37 universities worldwide, visited Lingnan University on 15 March. The Office of Mainland and International Programmes (OMIP) organised an “Open House” for them.

Witnessed by more than 150 guests, 41 Lingnan students were sworn in on 15 March to be the 16th Project X volunteers. They will serve 37 youngsters in need in the forthcoming year.

Mr Shinji Yamaguchi, a researcher from the National Institute for Defense Studies of the Japanese Ministry of Defense, was invited to speak on “China-Japan Maritime Relations: Impacts on East Asian Security and Stability” on 18 March.

Centre for Humanities Research held the “Hong Kong Literature and Culture of the 1950s Seminar Series (16): Hong Kong Photography of the 1950s” on 19 March. Well-acclaimed photographer Ms Wong Wo-bik and curator Ms Sylvia Ng were invited to speak on Hong Kong photography of the 1950s.

Mr Adrian Cheng, named one of the 40 global business stars aged under 40 in 2012 by Fortune magazine, was invited to have a dialogue with Lingnan students on “Building a New World” on 22 March.

Prof Yuriko Saito, Vincent Woo Distinguished Visiting Scholar 2012-13 at Lingnan University, delivered a public lecture on “Everyday Aesthetics and World-Making” on 26 March.

Prof Steven Schroeder was invited to host a cross-disciplinary seminar, entitled “The Way Time Turns: Virginia Woolf, Toni Morrison, and Mo Yan”, organised by the Centre for Humanities Research on 26 March. It was a seminar as much on literature as on philosophy.

Lingnan University Rowing Team achieved excellence at the Head of Shing Mun and the 13th Hong Kong Universities Indoor Rowing Championships, LU Station, held on 3 and 6 March respectively.

Lingnan Chinese Debate Team won the second runner-up prize in the Inter-Universities Debate Competition organised by the RTHK on 23 March. Wong Chun-hei, Year-1 Faculty of Arts student, was crowned the Best Debater.
