In response to the nomination by Legislative Council member the Hon Charles Peter Mok, Lingnan University Council Chairman the Hon Bernard Chan took the “Ice Bucket Challenge” on 21 August and then nominated President Leonard K Cheng, who took the challenge on 22 August.
The Service-Learning Festival 2014 was held successfully from 4 to 26 September with an array of activities to promote the giving culture on Lingnan campus.
The first LU Service Day, co-organised by five student societies and the Student Services Centre, was held in the afternoon of 13 September, with about 140 Lingnan students serving the needy in six different service projects.
Alumna Brenda Hong, an outstanding local artist, shared her knowledge of modern ink painting with Lingnan staff and students at a seminar on 16 September.
At the “Tuesdays with Mentors” dinner talk on 16 September, Lingnan alumnus Dr Henry Choi shared with students how he overcame the challenges in career development and encouraged students to build a positive attitude.
The opening of the “We Are Golden” Film Series, jointly organised by the Core Curriculum and General Education Office (CCGEO), the Centre for Cinema Studies (CCS) and CNEX Foundation Ltd, was held on 18 September.
“University is a place for personal discovery and transformation. It is also where students explore and define their dreams, and equip themselves with the necessary knowledge and skills for their future pursuits,” said President Leonard K Cheng in his fifth Letter to Lingnanians published on 1 September, urging students to take full advantage of the learning opportunities to identify and attain their goals.
With the completion of the Shanghai-Hong Kong Future Leaders (Lingnan Elites) Internship Programme organised for the first time from May to July this year, a number of participating students talked about their internship and life experience gained during the seven weeks they spent in Shanghai in a sharing session held on 23 September.
The Council of Lingnan University has set up a panel to review the Lingnan University Ordinance, focussing mainly on student participation in Council business as stipulated in the Ordinance. A campus-wide consultation is being launched from September through November.
Lingnan University (LU) welcomes the Government’s announcement on 3 October 2014 of the appointment of Mr Rex Auyeung Pak-kuen to succeed The Hon Bernard Charnwut Chan as Chairman of the Council of LU from 22 October 2014.
Lingnan Rowing Team achieved remarkable results in the 7th Jackie Chan Challenge Cup Hong Kong Universities Rowing Championships 2014 held on 16-17 August at Shing Mun River, Shatin.
Lingnan University’s Chinese Debate Team won the First Runner-up and the best debater prizes at the 16th Basic Law Debating Competition organised by the Joint Committee for the Promotion of the Basic Law of Hong Kong on 31 August.
After one and a half years of comprehensive research, Associate Professor Lau Chi-pang of Lingnan’s Department of History concluded his study of Hong Kong’s airports – from the Kai Tak era to Chek Lap Kok – in his new publication Legend of the Sky – from Kai Tak to Chek Lap Kok, a project commissioned by the Airport Authority Hong Kong. A book launch was held at Asia Society Hong Kong on 12 September.
The new issue of the Library Matters, a publication of Fong Sum Wood Library of Lingnan University, is now available online.
The 17th volume of Slant, a newsletter of the Office of Service-Learning of Lingnan University, is now published. The theme of this issue is “Continue to Grow in Wisdom”.
The University records with deep sadness the passing of Dr Ng Wing-mui (Mui-E) in late July.
Lingnan University graduate Lau Sui-lung started cycling from Guzhang county of Hunan province in Mainland China in mid-September to raise funds for five rural primary schools there to build libraries.
