Lingnan University will kick-off a year-long celebration of the 50th Anniversary of its re-establishment in Hong Kong in the last quarter of 2017. A Launch Ceremony will be held to mark the commencement of the year-long celebration. We are delighted to be inviting our alumni back to the University for this ceremony.
Alumni Homecoming Day 2017, the annual highlight for all Lingnanians, was successfully held on 29 and 30 July. More than 600 alumni, their families and friends joined this event and had an amazing time together on the campus.
To recognise and reward collaborative effort and achievement in enhancing teaching and learning, the Teaching and Learning Centre launched the Teaching Excellence Team Award for the first time.
As one of the Asian members of the Global Liberal Arts Alliance, two faculty members of Lingnan University including Prof Mark McGinley, Head and Prof Jonathan Fong, Assistant Professor of the Science Unit participated in a four-day workshop on science and engineering education held in The American College of Greece from 18 to 21 June. The goal of the workshop is to build an international community of science faculty at liberal arts colleges to share ideas, resources and enthusiasm about teaching and learning in science.
Prof Mark McGinley, Director of Core Curriculum and General Education participated in two general education conferences in June, namely the “General Education Conference 2017: Evolution and Transformation” organised by the Federation for Self-financing Tertiary Education (FSTE) from 15 to 16 June and the “2017 Institute on General Education cum Teacher and Student Conference” organised by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) from 27 to 30 June. International scholars and local professors committed to general education gathered for best practice sharing and exchange of views.
A delegation from the Hong Kong-America Center with undergraduate and postgraduate students from Asia, North America, Europe and Australia visited Lingnan University on 28 June for exchange of views on issues related to climate change.
Co-organised by the Faculty of Business of Lingnan University and Hertford College of the University of Oxford, the “Two-Week Advanced Business Programme” was held from 2 to 15 July at the University of Oxford. Twelve Lingnan BBA undergraduate students were sponsored by the Faculty to join the programme.
Lingnan University organised the “Experience in Lingnan University” together with Lingnan Dr Chung Wing Kwong Memorial Secondary School, Lingnan Hang Yee Memorial Secondary School and Lingnan Secondary School from 2 to 4 July on the campus of Lingnan. Some 90 students from the three secondary schools joined the event, which showcased the strong bond of the reunion of the Lingnan family. The event was generously supported by the Lingnan Education Organization (LEO), which aims to offer opportunities for secondary students to experience liberal arts education as well as the vibrant living-and-learning environment at Lingnan through a rich array of lectures, programmes and hostel experience.
The Faculty of Business hosted the “2017 Zhejiang University Ningbo Institute of Technology (NIT) Summer Programme” from 3 to 9 July and the “2017 Hubei University of Economics (HBUE) School of Finance Summer Programme” from 10 to 16 July. 23 undergraduates of NIT and 48 undergraduates of HBUE participated in these two one-week programmes respectively.
The Shanghai-Hong Kong Future Leaders (Lingnan Elites) Internship Programme 2017 came to an end on 12 July. Along with the celebration of the HKSAR’s 20th anniversary, 21 participating Lingnan students were invited to share the joy of various celebratory activities in Shanghai, in addition to the group visit to Alibaba in Hangzhou. To thank all internship companies and supporting organisations, the programme’s organiser, the Hong Kong-Shanghai Economic Development Association (HSEDA) held a closing ceremony on 10 July.
The “Mainland, Hong Kong and Macau Young STEAM Maker Competition 2017” jointly organised by Lingnan University, National Institute of Education Sciences and New Territories School Heads Association, and co-organised by 13 organisations from the education, information technology and social service sectors in Mainland and Hong Kong including the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers and the Hong Kong Information Technology Joint Council, was held from 21 to 24 July on the campus of Lingnan.
A delegation of six universities from Nanjing including Communication University of China, Nanguang College, Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Nanjing Institute of Technology, Nanjing Normal University, Nanjing Medical University and China Pharmaceutical University, accompanied by Ms Sze Wan-nga and Mr Chan Kai-king, executive directors of Freetech Road Recycling Technology (Holdings) Company Limited, visited Lingnan University on 21 July for exploring possible co-operation in various areas. Vice presidents and professors of these six institutions met with Dr Li Donghui, Associate Vice-President (Student Affairs), Ms Jenny Ko, Director of Student Services, Ms Joanne Lai, Director of Office of Global Education, and Mr Matthew Mo, Director of Institutional Advancement and Alumni Affairs.
The following appointment / re-appointments to the Council and the Court of the University have been made recently with effect from 1 August 2017.
Time is scarce. As Dr Stephen R. Covey said, “The key is in not spending time, but in investing it.” Given the scarcity of time, let’s see how William Chan Wai-chuen, one of our outstanding alumni, made the best investments of his time at Lingnan.
Five Lingnan students were selected to join two overseas social service programmes. They will develop and implement community service projects in the coming six months so that they can understand the development of community and public services in different regions, with their horizon broadened and leadership skills nurtured.
To provide a platform for international research on higher education policy and governance with particular focus on the Asia Pacific region and Asia-Europe comparison, the “Inter-university Research Consortium for Higher Education” was launched in October last year at Lingnan University. The Research Consortium attracts leading academics and researchers in the field of higher education policy and governance from the USA, UK and Asia to join international research projects.
In the new issue of Lingnan Chronicle, readers can understand more about the University’s new brand campaign under the brand tagline “Liberal Arts Education‧Transformation For Life” and the key brand attributes. The highlights of events to be organised in celebration of the University’s golden jubilee are also shared.
