Awards and Achievements

The University organised the Research and Knowledge Transfer Excellence Awards Presentation Ceremony on 23 March.  The objective of the awards is to honour achievements of Lingnan scholars that have transformed and benefited society and also assisted the University in developing close ties with the local and regional community.  They were presented when the University is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of its re-establishment in Hong Kong this year.

Lingnan University appointed three distinguished individuals as Honorary Court Members in appreciation of their invaluable support to the University as former Council or Court members and their contributions to the society.  An award ceremony was held on 21 March at Lingnan Club in Central.

Ms Tse Man-kei, Lingnan’s MPhil student in Psychology received the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowships for Postgraduate Research Students at the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Awards Presentation Ceremony 2018 held on 18 March.

Lingnan’s Taekwondo athlete To Kwan-kam grasped the championship in the USFHK Inter-Universities Taekwondo Competition 2017-18 (Light Weight, 68-74kg) held at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University on 25 February.  Under the very challenging knock-out system adopted by the USFHK Inter-Universities Taekwondo Competition, Kwan-kam won the top prize after defeating his contestants in all four matches with his perseverance and determination.

To celebrate the 100th birthday of Dr Tin Ka Ping, Tin Ka Ping Foundation has donated HK$3 million each to nine local higher education institutions including Lingnan University to support activities in nurturing their students.

Lingnan University organised the Naming Ceremony of Jonathan KS Choi Art Studio on 3 April in appreciation of Dr Jonathan Choi Koon-shum’s generous donation in setting up the “Jonathan Choi Student Exchange and Internship Scheme”.

Eight UGC-funded universities including City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Lingnan University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Education University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and The University of Hong Kong joined hands in launching an environmental campaign “UNIfy: Skip the Straw” from12 to 16 March to reduce single-use plastic straws.

To promote science education to the general public especially the Tuen Mun community, the Science Unit organised the inaugural Family Science Day with the RTC Gaia School on 10 March for 30 parents and primary students.

Lingnan University hosted the “A Day at University” campus visit for over 100 students from 11 primary schools in Tuen Mun on 9 March, which offered them the opportunity to experience university life at the campus of Hong Kong’s liberal arts university.  The activity also served to strengthen the University’s connections with its neighbouring communities.

President Leonard K Cheng, and Prof Joshua Mok Ka-ho, Vice-President represented Lingnan University to attend the Global Liberal Arts Alliance (GLAA) Leadership meeting held at Al Akhawayn University in Morocco from 4 to 6 March.

The Core Curriculum and General Education Office and Science Unit launched the Visiting Science Scholar Seminar Series 2018 with two seminars held in March, namely “Species Diversity in the Yangtze River Basin” on 1 March and “Inspiration of AlphaGo – Machine Learning: From Efficiency to Intelligence” on 8 March.  Both seminars attracted a full house attendance with a total of 100 participants including Lingnan staff and students, as well as secondary school teachers.

A picture is a representation that can take the form of a painting, a drawing or a photograph.  Have you ever thought of why both photographs and “handmade images” like paintings belong to the family of pictures, and are capable of portraying exactly the same scene or object, but the two bring totally different impressions?  Prof Mikael Pettersson, Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy and a recipient of the RGC Competitive Grants Award 2018, will initiate a research project titled “Philosophical Perspectives on Photography” with a funding of HK$170,000 under the Early Career Scheme of the Research Grants Council.

On 24 February, the Think-Act-Contribute (TAC) Health Leaders under the Jockey Club “We Care, We Serve & We Learn @ Tuen Mun” Programme joined the Family Day organised by Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service - Hong Kong at the Olympic Square of Hong Kong Park.  During the event, six Lingnan students and 38 elderly served as TAC Health Leaders to promote the concept of happy family and healthy living.
