嶺南大學(嶺大)與清華大學華商研究中心、中國華僑華人研究所於2019年3月2日假嶺南大學校園合辦《「一帶一路」沿線華僑華人史話叢書》首發式暨學術研討會。是次活動得到廣東教育出版社、南洋理工大學「一帶一路」研究中心及廣東華僑歷史學會協辦,並獲得中國友好和平發展基金會及廣東省僑聯的支持。

Lingnan University (LU) and South China University of Technology (SCUT) held the launch ceremony of the "Joint Research Centre for Greater Bay Area – Social Policy and Governance” on 2 March at the South China University of Technology in Guangzhou. The purposes of this cooperation are to enhance LU students’ understanding about the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and to encourage more cross-regional social governance research projects. On the other hand, the collaboration will also engage the students of South China University of Technology in the research and practice of urban development and social governance in Hong Kong. Through lectures delivered by scholars and government officials, field visits in various forms, research forums on different topics and a wide range of other activities, students from both places can understand better the issues related to social governance and the corresponding challenges. More importantly, the understanding between the people in the two special administrative regions and the nine cities in the Guangdong Province can also be enhanced and the people can learn more about their future development trajectories through the research results published by the centre.

Lingnan University hosted the “A Day at University” campus visit for over 100 students from 15 primary schools in Tuen Mun on 1 March, offering them the opportunity to experience the colourful campus life at the Hong Kong’s liberal arts university. The activity also strengthened the University’s connections with its neighbouring communities.

Lingnan University co-hosted the international symposium on “Internationalization and Quality Management in Higher Education” with the Asia Pacific Higher Education Research Partnership (APHERP), with the collaboration with School of Public Administration of South China University of Technology, and School of Education of Guangzhou University on 26 February 2019.

The Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies (APIAS) of Lingnan University held a Sharing Session cum Certificate of Recognition Presentation Ceremony of the first batch of the university-led district-based programme: Jockey Club Age-friendly City Project - Rural Neighbourhood Development Project (the Project) on 24 February at Patrick Lee Wan Keung Academic Building of Lingnan University, which was aimed at enhancing the public awareness towards older people reside in both Tuen Mun and Yuen Long rural areas, sharing of experiences and good practices, as well as recognizing Rural Befrienders of this project. We were delighted to have the presence of Ms. CHIU Lai Chun, Kitty, Assistant District Social Welfare Officer (Tuen Mun) and Ms. WONG Ngok Ching, Samantha, Assistant District Social Welfare Officer (Yuen Long) of Social Welfare Department to express their support and appreciation to project participants and to assist in presenting certificates to Rural Befrienders.

Organised by the Science Unit, a science seminar “Insect Chemical Ecology: Bugs can be chemists, too” was held on 19 February with around 70 participants including Lingnan students and staff.

The special film screening of Yauking, organised by the Core Curriculum and General Education Office of Lingnan, CNEX and Tung Wah Group of Hospitals on 19 February, attracted around a hundred Lingnan students and staff. The documentary records the final pages of the life journey of a hundred-year-old lady, Yauking, and her struggles for life and death.

To celebrate the Year of the Pig, the Student Services Centre and the Office of Global Education co-organised the Lantern Legend 2019 on 18 February, an annual carnival that fills the campus with festive Lunar New Year atmosphere. The celebratory occasion also serves as a platform for non-local staff and students to experience the Chinese traditional culture on Lingnan’s multicultural campus.

Here are some good news for those who love playing instrument(s) or singing and want to earn credits for that. 

In the upcoming 2019-20 academic year, the Wong Bing Lai Music and Performing Arts Unit will introduce the Instrumental Ensemble and the Choral Ensemble courses. Each course bears one credit per term. The ensemble courses require a 2-hour rehearsal every week with chances to perform.

Aleksandar EFTIMOVSKI, the Artist-in-Residence (AiR) of Lingnan University for the first semester of 2018-19, not only took charge of the course “Studio Practice” in wood-carving, but also held an exhibition, Continuity, in late December at the Leung Fong Oi Wan Art Gallery to showcase the artworks made by students.

Imminent social issues are evoking the need for change, and it will be up to young people to rise to the challenge and make a positive impact on the society at large.

 

In view of internationalisation, Lingnan has recently established new agreements on academic exchange with Harbin Institute of Technology in China, UCL University College in Denmark, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana, Doshisha University, Kindai University and Kyushu University in Japan, EM NORMANDIE Business School and Montpellier Business School in France, Leuphana University of Lüneburg in Germany, Dankook University, Ewha Womans University and Seoul National University in Korea, Tilburg University in The Netherlands, and University of Cambridge, Girton College, University of Leeds and King’s College London in UK.

Lingnan University had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Enlightenment & Innovation in Arts, Science and Culture Association (EISAC) on 14 January to launch the Insurance Internship Programme.

New Publications

The latest issue of Lingnan Chronicle features a number of stories of distinguished Lingnanians who live up to the University’s motto of “Education For Service”. In particular, Prof Paul WHITLA, Associate Professor of Teaching from the Department of Marketing and International Business, who received the Distinguished Teacher Award, shares his 24 years of unwavering efforts to inspire students and new teachers with his passion and professionalism.
