"From Museum Curatorial Practice to the Appreciation of Chinese Painting"

by Mr. SZETO Yuen Kit

Abstract:

The social and educational roles of contemporary museums are increasingly vital. Unlike traditional classrooms, museums offer diverse, dynamic, and object-centered learning experiences that foster deeper engagement and lasting memories. Museum studies suggest that exhibition planning benefits from educational theories on sensory perception, cognition, psychology, and emotion. Aligning interpretive strategies with audience cognition enhances reflection and learning. Using innovative displays and varied media, modern museums present exhibits that integrate art, history, society, and visitors’ experiences, including local culture, deepening viewers’ understanding and appreciation. This Master Class uses Chinese paintings, past and present, as a case study to show how museums, through research, curatorial work, and public interaction, effectively fulfil their mission of knowledge dissemination and education.
