Virtual Open House 2022 for non-local career counsellors and high school students

The LU Virtual Open House was held on 30 March (English session) and 14 May (Chinese session) 2022. It was designed to inform high school counsellors, prospective students and parents from all over the world about LU, and to connect them with current students, faculty and staff from the comfort of their own homes.

In his opening remarks, Prof Leonard K Cheng, the President of LU, stressed that liberal arts education supports career success in a world characterised by continual technological innovations in an era of change and uncertainty. He stated that “[w]hile we frequently talk about how jobs done by humans today will gradually be taken over by machines that feature artificial intelligence and automation, we must also realise that no technologies will be able to perform creative and critical thinking, exhibit effective and empathetic communication, understand human needs, and have interpersonal skills for fruitful collaboration, all of which are emphasised in liberal arts education.” Some of the distinguishing features of LU’s liberal arts education are its interdisciplinary curriculum, small classes, vibrant residential campus, rich international exposure and experiential learning. These unique features help our students to achieve life-long success by transforming them into responsible global citizens with deep knowledge and awareness of various global issues, and of the unpredictable future and challenges of our ever-changing society.

The Open House included short informative sessions conducted by our academic, admissions and professional staff, who explained the distinctive features of our undergraduate programmes across our Faculties of Arts, Business and Social Sciences and School of Interdisciplinary Studies, and the various learning opportunities related to exchanges, service learning and entrepreneurship. Our student representatives from Kazakhstan, Pakistan and Vietnam also shared their first-hand experiences of studying at LU. In sum, the Open House allowed participants to better understand LU’s liberal arts education and how it helps our students to achieve life-long success.
