Welcoming of incoming exchange students

Every semester, LU welcomes incoming exchange students from countries around the world to Hong Kong to experience our unique liberal arts education. On orientation day, the OGE provides these students with important information about Hong Kong and campus life and advice for their stay in Hong Kong. The orientation talks and the Survival Cantonese class in the 2021-22 academic year were given virtually to enable participation by recently arrived exchange students staying at local quarantine hotels. At the end of the quarantine period, the students moved into our student hostel and were greeted individually by OGE staff, who assisted them with the necessary student registration procedures.

Online interactive cultural tours were arranged with expert guides, who led students virtually to different parts of Hong Kong. Using Zoom, incoming exchange students were brought to Central to take a look at the world’s longest outdoor escalator, the newly-refurbished Tai Kwun complex that hosts 16 revitalised heritage buildings, and one of Hong Kong's oldest temples, Man Mo Temple. On the tour to Aberdeen, they saw fishing vessels and the houseboats of the Tanka people, and the bustling local fish-market in a traditional floating village.

“Yummy Wednesdays” were also organised to give incoming exchange students a taste of some traditional Chinese food they might not have previously enjoyed. Thus, on certain Wednesdays throughout the term, the students were invited to taste selected local snacks and beverages such as mooncakes, Chinese almond biscuits, peanut brittle, egg rolls, haw flakes, Chinese natural herbal candy, milk tea and mango pomelo sago, and were also given information to read on these items.
