Local art workshops

The local art workshops series newly launched by the Office of Global Education received an overwhelming response from our incoming exchange students in 2022–23. Over 30 incoming exchange students participated in traditional Chinese bamboo fan-painting workshops, where they learned how to paint typical Chinese art motifs, such as goldfish and flowers. This provided them with a brief introduction to Chinese painting and gave them a basic understanding and appreciation of this unique art form.

In the neon light art workshop in Term 1, 2022–23, students experienced the traditional glass neon-light culture that makes Hong Kong glow at night with dazzling signs. Importantly, the workshop emphasised safety by using contemporary light-emitting diode “neon” lights. The students learned the skills of crafting a neon sign decoration from an experienced artist and had some hands-on experience in bending, splicing and attaching electrodes. They took their portable neon light masterpieces with their chosen English words home as souvenirs to keep the culture of neon lights alive.

During the Chinese New Year, incoming exchange students in Term 2, 2022–23 were invited to follow local traditions and write their own fai chun on red paper with black ink for the Year of the Rabbit. Thus, they participated in a calligraphy workshop where they learned the basics of Chinese calligraphy and the fundamentals of writing Chinese characters. Then, they got their hands dirty with ink as they embarked on their calligraphy journey!
